20th June 2009
On Saturday 20th June, four young people from Havering went to Redbridge Sports Centre to represent the borough at the Trampolining section of the prestigious, annual, London Youth Games. Traditionally, Havering never used to enter the trampoline section, as no-one offered to organise the team.
In 2004, Julie Hand from Storm Trampoline Club, based at Hall Mead School (who host the Havering Schools competition every year), decided to put together a team and has entered on behalf of Havering every year since. Out of the 20+ London boroughs competing, the Havering team had never been out of the top 5, but had never achieved the top spot.
This year, two members of the team were from Hall Mead, Daniel Miles- who left this year and Alex Jones in year 10, came 26th & 33rd respectively out of the 94 competitors from every London borough. Hannah McCann, from Sacred Heart came 6th overall and Stephanie Watts , who goes to Gaynes School, achieved 34th place overall.
The team had the daunting task of living up to the fact that Havering WON the competition the previous year and although on the day we realised that retaining the title was unlikely, we still hoped for a top 5 spot.
In the end, we were all very pleased to find out that the team had got onto the podium in an impressive 3rd place. This success contributed to Havering narrowly WINNING the whole London Youth Games Borough Cup!
